hi! there's a lot going on at Wild Heart this spring so we have added an "on the calendar" section at the end of each email so you always know what's going on! The first time I attended a local plant walk it completely changed my life. Many years ago I was invited by local herbalist Sarah Berkman to explore a local farm in Portsmouth, Rhode Island to forage for herbs, gather some that interested us, and just be outside with the plants and each other. I brought my then very young son Lennox with me, grabbed one of my favorite baskets, and headed out, not really sure what the experience would be like. Sarah generously pointed out abundant herbs growing along stone walls, pasture edges, and hiding in plain sight all around us. There was nettle and mugwort, cleavers and violet, dandelion and chickweed. Herbs that I had heard about, but many I was meeting in person for the first time. She instructed on identifying characteristics, how to sustainably harvest, what the herbs were used for and why. It was eye opening to say the least! I learned how to notice individual plants in a sea of green, knowing what to look for, how to really see. When I returned home to a house that I had lived in for many years, I saw the plants growing all around me with fresh eyes. I found many of the herbs Sarah had taught me how to identify including nettle, cleavers, mugwort, chickweed, and plantain. I was flabbergasted! How had I not noticed these before?! But that is the beauty of increased awareness and expanded vision, you finally notice things that have been there the entire time. Now whenever I visit someone's home or explore a new park, yard, or walking trail I always look around for my familiar friends; the herbs that I know and love that make me feel at home wherever I go. That make me feel welcome and at ease in new surroundings. Then, when I moved into a new home about four years ago I was at first dismayed by my new much smaller yard, thinking that the herbs wouldn't be there to greet me. I was completely wrong! As soon as spring arrived the familiar plants were there. I found cleavers, dandelion, chickweed, onion grass, and the largest most beautiful patch of white violets that I have ever seen, bringing tears to my eyes and a joyful understanding that I belong here too, my friends welcoming me with their beauty and grace. And it all started with a plant walk with a local herbalist so many years ago. Now with the intention of reciprocity, of passing along this important wisdom and knowledge, The price to attend this event is sliding scale $15-35 with a suggested price of $25. We will observe + identify early spring medicinal herbs, discuss their healing properties, and learn how to collaborate with them. We will also pause in one of my fav spots for a guided meditation to really feel the earth beneath our feet, the beauty of various birdsongs, and wind touching our skin. Learning about the plants that are growing around you is SO FUN and allows us to connect more deeply with this incredible planet that we call home! The plants are here for us all, no matter how much money you make or how much wealth your family holds. Herbs are the people's medicine and it is your birthright to learn how to connect with them. So much bright green love to you Reader, and I hope to see you at the shop or in the gardens soon!
